Heidi Hawkins

Meet Heidi: President of the Penguicon Board and Organizer of Chaos!

Tell Us About Yourself!
“Hi! My name is Heidi, and I am the president of the Penguicon Board of Directors and the self-proclaimed organizer of chaos. My primary goal is to establish clear objectives for Penguicon, fostering stronger relationships with both our community and sponsors. This, I hope, will help Penguicon grow and thrive even more in the future.

Beyond Penguicon, I juggle a busy life as an account manager at Panasonic, where I work in the automotive industry, and as a graduate student at Michigan State University. I’m currently pursuing a Master’s in Business for Management Strategy and Leadership—though I wouldn’t dare call myself a master just yet!

You may have also seen me at Penguicon leading the watercolor galaxy panels, where we create entire watercolor galaxies in under two hours. It’s always a blast!”

What’s one book, movie, show, or game you think everyone should check out?
“If you’re a podcast fan, I highly recommend My Favorite Murder. Come talk to me about it anytime—I’m always up for some true crime chat!”

How do you like to spend your free time (aside from Penguicon!)?
“When I’m not pushing my brain through graduate-level ‘thinking Olympics,’ I love spending my time on creative pursuits like painting and learning how to crochet. Life can get hectic, but I do my best to carve out time for these fun projects whenever I can.”

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
“Getting a full night’s sleep and actually feeling rested—does that count as a superpower? Because I’d take it in a heartbeat!”

What inspired you to become involved with Penguicon and the Board of Directors?
“I have loved every experience I’ve had with Penguicon, and I want others to share that same feeling of joy. My goal is to help Penguicon grow and flourish so that it can continue to be a special place for decades to come.”

What is your favorite thing about Penguicon?
“I adore the inclusivity of this community. No matter your background—tech-savvy or not—you can come to Penguicon, learn, and feel like you belong. That’s a truly special quality.”

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about Penguicon?
“It’s not just a tech con! Penguicon offers something for everyone, and there’s always an opportunity to make a new friend or discover a new passion.”

What’s a fun or memorable story from a past Penguicon?
“My partner and I once coordinated a pirate treasure chest event, and it was incredible to see attendees search for clues and get so excited when they uncovered the mysterious pirate treasure. The enthusiasm was contagious!”

What advice would you give to someone attending Penguicon for the first time?
“Join a panel on a topic you know nothing about—you’ll have way more fun than you expect!”

In one word, how would you describe the Penguicon community?
“Family.”

We’re so lucky to have Heidi’s leadership and passion guiding Penguicon. Be sure to say hello at the next event—especially if you’re a fellow fan of watercolor painting or true crime podcasts!
