If you knit all the stitches in the round, they will show the pretty little v's (aka stockinette stitch). If you knit a row then purl a row in the round, you will get garter stitch, which is when you see the purl bumps on both sides. It's opposite of what happens on straight needles. How to join in the round https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXJpwbE0mtk Double Pointed needles in the round https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9OrDriAmtI You can use circular needles at magic loop method (see my blog post on it on how to do magic loop. I can't DPN knit, so I learned magic loop) to do the top of hats, socks, smaller tubes, etc. Youtube is a great source for knitting - english style, continental style (you learned english in this class today, some find continental to be more comfortable), in the round, on straights, double pointed needles, etc. There are SO many videos for everything on youtube - here's a channel full of different stitches/stitch patterns. https://www.youtube.com/user/watchknitting/videos Easy scarf with a nifty pattern: http://www.purlsoho.com/create/2016/04/06/broken-garter-scarf/ You can use whatever yarn you want and the size needles for it. Places to buy yarn/needles: You can get them at big box stores - meijer, walmart, some targets. You can also go to craft stores like Jo-Ann's, Michaels, (hobby lobby), fields fabrics. etc. You can also go to local yarn stores (LYS). They are owned by people, typically a small business. Their prices are a bit higher, but its also GOOD yarn - wools and linens and silks and stuff - not just acrylics. You can also go online, to knitpicks or etsy or jimmy bean wool or yarn.com. My youtube channel (wannabe1987) has some knitting videos. I'm new to video making and have a crappy webcam to use. My blog also has some knitting posts on it - wannabe1987.wordpress.com My contact info: Text: 616 264 8435 Email: kelly.vanderwell@gmail.com Twitter: @wannabe1987 (if you tag me in a post about needing help during con, or email/text me during normal waking hours about needing help with a knitted thing, I will attempt to help you/find you and assist. If you text/post/tag/email during sleeping hours, all bets are off and you'll probably have to wait until after I've had coffee....)
