Award-Winning Science Fiction Writer to Speak at SVSU

Science fiction novelist and poet Joe Haldeman will give a public
reading of his works Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m in the Ott Auditorium of
Saginaw Valley State University’s Regional Education Center. He will
read from his award-winning novel "The Forever War."

A native of Oklahoma, Haldeman was inspired by great authors such as
Heinlein, Clarke, and Bester. In 1970 Haldeman began writing, and two
years later he published his first short novel "War Year."

Published in 1975, "The Forever War" earned Hugo, Nebula, and Ditmar
awards as the best science fiction novel that year. He has authored more
than 20 books; others that have received awards include "Forever Peace"
and "Camouflage."

"The Forever War" was also adapted as a live stage show that opened in
Chicago in 1983 and was performed by the Organic Theatre Company.
Haldeman has also written the screenplay for the science fiction film
"Robot Jox" and a short story, "I of Newton," which appeared on the
television show "The Twilight Zone" in 1985.

A Vietnam veteran, Haldeman was a combat engineer with the 4th
Division; he received a Purple Heart and other medals for his service.

During his visit to SVSU, Haldeman also will be visiting honors courses
dealing with the theme of war. He has been an adjunct instructor at
Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has taught writing workshops
at Michigan State University and elsewhere.

The reading is open to the public. Admission is free of charge. For
more information, call (989) 964-4063.
