I've been there.  I learned real quick to hold on to my old drivers
until I'm sure the latest and greatest is working.  You friend should
be able to get ahold of the old driver from somewhere on the Net, if
not from Belkin.

Ick.  I hope the Ubuntu folks are aware of this.

This kinda brings up an issue for me regarding the many different
distros out there.  Each distro has it's own way of doing things, their
own feature set, custom kernel settings, etc.  As a result, the user,
especially the new user, has to decide which of the dozens of distros
out there to choose from.  And you thought choosing between three OS's
were tough!  Early on, I was under the impression that Linux, as a
whole, was supposed to eliminate such confusion;  That no matter which
flavor of Linux you went with, it was still the same Linux.  Nope. 
With the customization of the kernel, GUI's, even apps, to the casual
user, it's like choosing between different OS's.
