Still can. :-D
"Standard" transmission (a misnomer, since automatic transmissions are
the standard these days) is still available... at least on many
models. You just have to ask for it. I think the Jeep Wrangler is one
of the very few vehicles where you have to ask for an automatic or
risk a rude surprise. (when I bought mine, half the ones on the lot
had manual)
Lack of power steering really was horrible. Drivers back then had to
have some arm muscles... Especially at parking lot speeds.
