[penguicon-general] Job Posting

I have a strange relationship with marketing. I think I would probably
be good at it if I could figure out what it is.

I got a D minus in a marketing class I took in college which was one
of my most boring classes ever. I was expected to invent a fake
product and take polls of other students to find out if people liked
it. At the end of the course, I realized that if you asked me what
marketing was, after listening to that teacher drone on mindlessly for
months (about a subject he obviously had been ordered to teach against
his will), I could not tell you that basic answer.

And yet, since then, in my life, and on the internet, I have heard
people talk about marketing constantly as if it were the promotion of
a product itself, not designing products and taking polls about them.
Sometimes it seems to have something to do with finding out what the
market wants, and fitting products or services to what the market will
bear. The "marketing department" one hears about in the Dilbert comic
strip seems to fit this when they overrule the engineering department.

But then, people often say to me the advertising and public relations
I have done are good marketing. And yet that has to do with changing
what the public wants, which is a different thing.

I have never been able to figure out what tasks professional marketing
people do on a day-to-day basis. It's really frustrating.

That's why I like this ad for its mention of flyers and announcements.

But the fact that they demand some vague "enthusiasm" about nothing in
particular is reason enough to tell them to jump in the lake. I am
enthusiastic about specific things that I choose because I love them.
THAT IS NOT FOR SALE. If they aren't going to tell me what I'm
expected to be enthusiastic about, the answer is no.
