There is a term within SF circles called SMOF, for Secret Masters of
Fandom. It is usually used ironically, because often these folks are part
of the public face of the organization (thus not very secret), or are
unknown because they're quietly in the background doing all the moderately
thankless tasks necessary to make the convention happen (thus, not very high
in terms of Master status).
A while back, I'd heard people express concerns from some folks that
PenguiCon's power structure was too closed. I suggested to John that
having a regular meeting, which everyone was invited to. First, it would
allow a lot of the more gung ho folks who were making the convention happen
to gather, without a plan, hang out, and eat pizza. And, since anyone who
wants to can come, it's a good way for people who have questions about
what's being done and why to meet the people making those decisions.
I suggested the name SMOP (Secret Masters of PenguiCon) because I loved the
irony of that name attached to a completely open meeting in which anyone can
show up and give the people doing the job their ideas about how the thing
should be done. (:
That was probably a lot more information than you really wanted, but there
you go. (:
