Subject: [Stilyagi] open-source philanthropy
To: stilyagi <stilyagi at stilyagi.org>
The other day I watched Charlie Rose interview Bill & Melinda Gates and
Warren Buffet after Buffet's big donation. Then Thursday the Gates
Foundation announced massive funding for AIDS research, but ONLY if the
researchers share their data. Approx $280+ million in funding, PLUS $10
million for the data-sharing project.
The European Union is still trying to get Microsoft to explain their OS
interface, and is close to charging them $350+ million dollars for
not adequately doing so. The guy M$ *paid* to explain it said, "This
is junk we've got here."
Bill Gates, open-source philanthropist, closed-source capitalist. Think
Linux vs. Microsoft.
Anyone who'd like to read the entire article, email me offlist: I need
your email to forward the WSJ article to you (I can't send it to the
list). Here's the beginning of the WSJ article:
Gates Won't Fund AIDS Researchers Unless They Pool Data
By MARILYN CHASE
July 20, 2006; Page B1
Frustrated that over two decades of research have failed to produce an
AIDS vaccine, Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates is tying his
foundation's latest, biggest AIDS-vaccine grants to a radical concept:
Those who get the money must first agree to share the results of their
work in short order.
vlt: would someone post this to the Penguicon list? I don't have their
address. Thanx.
