There's plenty of fandom not involving conventions.

Yes.  (Hint: look at the Hugo Awards.)

For that matter, there's plenty of fandom on the Internet that doesn't
involve conventions.  That seems a lot closer to fanzine (or APA)
fandom than to convention fandom, doesn't it?
