The most condensed version of fandom I've ever seen: "Fallen Angels" by Larry
Niven, Jerry Pournelle, Michael Flynn. Its under the guise of a sci-fi novel but
the book was basically written for and about the fen who attend sci-fi/fantasy
conventions. The jest of the book is that two astronauts from an orbital space
station crash after they are shot down during an air collecting trip and the fen
save the day.

You can pick up at your local book store, at your favorite online bookstore, or
find it up on the Baen Free Library. There are many other really good sci-fi
reads on there as well and they're free and easy to access online. Two of my
favorite authors that have books on there are Elizabeth Moon and David Weber.

Enjoy.
