So... I have no idea how we're doing on GoHs for Penguicon, but I wanted to
make a suggestion that I had posted on the Penguicon LJ but I don't think I
posted it here.
Svetlana Chmakova <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svetlana_Chmakova> is a very
talented author/artist who has a couple of published manga series:
DRAMACON, which is about life at a convention (specifically an anime
convention, but a lot of things cross genres... and vol 3 is being released
in December) and NIGHTSCHOOL (which was picked up by Yen Press earlier this
year. She has a large fan base and lives in Canada.
One reason that I'd like to see her at Penguicon is because this would draw
in more of the anime/manga fans... it would be a foot in that door. Also,
since her manga Dramacon is about a girl's first time at a convention and
the weird things/people there, she would be fun to have at an "First
Impressions at Con" type panel. She is also very familiar with the Japanese
comic industry and has a few other comics out there.
Yes, we already have a webcomic GoH, but I think Svetlana could be brought
in more on the anime/manga side of it. She wouldn't draw any attention away
from Randall but it would be a great addition. Also, Tamora Pierce was
recently released a graphic novel called White Tiger and it would be great
to have a couple of different perspectives on the graphic novel vs. manga
"feud." I would love to schedule a panel with Svetlana, Tamora & Randall
talking about the differences in what you write/draw when you're drawing
online only, when you have a combination (both online comics and written
manga like Svetlana) and when you only have hardcopy graphic
novels/novels... and how you have to plan for the different audiences and
what catches their attention. We'd be getting the full spectrum of
experience and type of work, and that would be great.
Anyway, Svetlana is a suggestions... if we can't bring her in for this
upcoming Penguicon that I certainly recommend her for another year, though I
think having her & Tamora on a panel together would be great, and would be
great publicity for Tamora's graphic novel (since it hasn't been received
too well, from what she was saying on her LJ).
