When Molly discussed this with me, I suggested that in order to play
to Penguicon's strengths, the two awards should celebrate the
crossover between real-life software and the social visions we see in
creative works about the future.
One award would be for a creative work about the future that
encourages and inspires technological freedoms and participatory
models of development and business.
The other award would be for a piece of software that best embodies
philanthropic hacktivism. Hacktivism is not just "by hackers for other
hackers", but seeks large-scale adoption by non-technical end users to
improve the global computing environment through freedoms and
participation.
Molly, thanks for this extremely interesting idea! One of the things
we'll need is a good name for it.
