Heyla, folks!
Ever wondered how the Board works? Now's your chance to find out. There is
a PenguiCon Board meeting scheduled for Sunday, August 13th. Let me know if
you'd be interested in attending, and I can keep you posted on time and
location, even if you're not a Board member. Spectators are allowed and
welcomed.
And, on a related note, I'm reposting the call for nominations for the
PenguiCon Board. Nominate yourself and come join us in the Vaunted Halls of
Power (OK, random living rooms) over the next year while we:
* discuss the future of PenguiCon
* revise the PenguiCon bylaws
* review the PenguiCon budget
* occasionally eat pizza
Nomination criteria below; let me know if you need a copy of the bylaws.
Hope y'all're having a good summer!

Subject: Seeking nominees for the PenguiCon Board of Directors.
To: penguicon-general at penguicon.org, stilyagi at stilyagi.org
As some of you may be aware, PenguiCon, like several of the local
conventions, has a legal entity associated with it which serves many
purposes. Partly, it is the entity with which the State of Michigan and
other governmental organizations interact with. The State of Michigan
requires this legal entity have a Board of Directors. Over the next year or
so, PenguiCon's Board will likely be working on revising PenguiCon's
bylaws. I also expect a great deal of discussion at Board meetings to wrap
words around PenguiCon's core values. We may also draft a mission statement
if that seems appopriate.
We have a Board seat opening up, and we're looking for candidates with
several characteristics.
First, enthusiasm. We need someone who is going to show up, understand the
issues enough to have an opinion, and debate those ideas politely, but
fervently, where appropriate.
Second, familiarity. Much of our Board is made up of former PenguiCon
chairs and people who've been working at PenguiCon since year 1.0. They are
people who are at least somewhat familiar not only with the original vision
for PenguiCon, but also with what has worked and what hasn't. Some of them
have IT backgrounds. Some have worked other conventions. While multi-year
association with PenguiCon is not a requirement, candidates should be
familiar with what we are, and what we're trying to do.
Third, a moderately high tolerance for fine administrative detail. As I
said, we're going to be working on Bylaws. This will require home study,
decoding legalese, and a tolerance for understanding that a business entity
is necessary not only to serve as a check and a balance upon the convention,
but to take the burden of the boring, behind-the-scenes administrivia which
allows the con com members to focus on simply making a great con.
As such, we're looking for candidates who are willing to do the following:
1. Read the current bylaws. The reasons for that are probably obvious.
2. Nominate themselves for the Board. Self-nomination rules out popularity
contests, and makes sure only the truly willing are put forth.
3. Provide a no more than one page statement to the current PenguiCon Board
describing why they'd make a good Board candidate.
Do you think you might be interested, but have more questions? Need a copy
of the bylaws? Feel free to email board at penguicon.org with any
questions. Whether they are procedural, practical, or vision-related, we'll
do our best to field them.
