This is an interesting discussion, and one I'm taking to heart as
John's assistant and probable Mistress of Communications. To wit: if
anyone has suggestions as to how to improve our internal
communications, please ping me privately. Because the issues that
Francine has raised here boil down, at least partially, to a problem
with internal communications.

That part, "feasible," is definitely the rub. When Tracy was Chair she
had a job that allowed her to spend a huge chunk of her time on the
Con. Steve wasn't working by choice the year he was chair. Methinks
that perhaps the amount of communication that they were able to provide
may have spoiled folks for future years when the Chairs have held
full-time jobs that actually demanded their attention. ;-) Even with me
working to facilitate things, well - I'm working part time but looking
for full-time work, and will do the best possible under the
circumstances.

This point interests me in sort of a theoretical in addition to a
practical way, so please pardon if I go in the first direction here.
I've been thinking a lot about the whole "good of the team vs. the good
of individuals on the team" idea at my work. My company is both a
for-profit venture and a "cause," given that we're a highly activist
LGBT paper. I've been juggling with how much I want to sacrifice for
that cause, how much I need for my own bottom-line well-being, etc.
However, I think that I'm learning to balance that - my individual
needs and wants - against the idea that at least from my boss' point of
view, the good of the company has to be the first consideration. After
all, if the company as a whole doesn't thrive, the individuals working
for it are screwed anyway. And what I've seen at work is a real team
effort - and part of the thing each of us on that team recognizes is
that we are, as individuals, each expendible for the good of that whole
team.

Just a thought.

Anyway, again, please get back to me if you have any ideas about
improving our internal communications.
